While rehab is a common term today, used to describe what the rich and famous do to address their problems with overindulgence, addictions to sex and drugs, being an adult child of an alcoholic, or being a codependent, it is rarely used in the context of marriage or couples counseling.
Marriage Rehab is a four-day retreat program for couples who have tried other forms of therapy and are looking for something more powerful. This program is the culmination of our combined 50 years of working with all kinds of couples from premarital to those in crisis.
We have found that the intensive couple-to-couple retreat (the four of us working together) is a highly effective way to help couples understand and resolve their problems as individuals as well as a couple. As a husband and wife team, counseling couples for over 25 years, we have specific training in marriage and sex therapy and marriage repair. We know personally and professionally about the challenges of modern day relationships. With this knowledge we bring to marriage therapy a blend of male and female perspectives and a comfort with the issues common to evolving relationships.

Unlike most marriage retreats this is not a group experience. Meeting with you, one couple at a time, allows us to deal exclusively with your personal relationship issues. The four of us usually begin in our comfortable counseling room with private bathroom, but occasionally we may be one-on-one for a short period of time to explore a specific issue. By day two or three we are moving into our special psychodrama space.
Some couples chose a gentle, client centered approach to personal growth, like 45-minute weekly therapy sessions. Others, like ourselves, prefer the intense and time-efficient retreat process. Although intense and emotional work is not for everyone, it truly is an efficient use of time for busy people and is useful for those who are looking for deep personal exploration.
Although the exact schedule of the 4-day Marriage Rehab retreat will vary, depending upon the specific problems that the couple is facing, a typical retreat might follow this pattern:
- Day 1: An examination of your personal backgrounds and experiences, including your history as a couple together and how you see your strengths, weaknesses, and problems. We then begin our work on communication skills and relationship building.
- Day 2: Using psychodrama of life's pivotal moments to explore the way you act, feel, and heal as an individual. Summarizing your weaknesses and strengths in the context of emotional communication.
- Day 3: Continuation of training in communication and other marriage skills. Couples psychodrama and the beginning of future planning.
- Day 4: Pull it all together and plan together to reincorporate new skills and awarenesses into a successful and positive future.
Psychodrama is an action-oriented method of psychotherapy for individuals, couples and groups. Participants are encouraged to act out conflictual life situations, real or imagined, thereby gaining insight, clarification, and catharsis. For a detailed description click on

Couples come to us because their marriages are falling apart. Many couples come here to talk about the things they have not been able to express successfully to each other... those issues that cause anxiety, depression, or addiction. Whether it is to rekindle or rescue their relationships or to explore the decision of a separation, we help move the relationship forward in a positive direction.
Unlike other programs, we advocate for marriage but not at the expense of an individual's well being. We believe that people have the right to be happy, and that children greatly benefit from authentically happy parents, and that the most important goal is to follow the truth... to treat each other honestly... and to do that with love and respect.
Couples have come to our marriage retreats from all around the world including Portugal, Mexico, Virgin Islands, Scotland, the Middle East, and most of the United States. They stay at a local B&B, motel, or hotel while meeting for four days of intensive marital therapy.
We have often heard from clients, many of whom themselves are therapists, that our marriage retreat program is worth more than a year of weekly therapy sessions. Come experience what many other couples have found to be a more satisfying, comfortable, private, cost effective, and time-efficient way to nourish or heal your marriage/relationship.
